Artist Statement
I create abstract pieces because they can tell any story. I want my pieces to focus on form over content by using texture, color, shape, and value. My main goal is to be able to create a body of work that is cohesive. I want to narrow down my pieces to a clear style, and to focus on how my style is received by others. I want my art to be interpreted in every way possible. Just because I focus on form doesn’t mean that others can’t view my piece in different ways.
I make decisions when making my work based on how I feel about the piece. My process is very focused on how I am feeling at the moment. If I feel that my piece needs more texture, then I use my palette knife and a glob of paint to enhance that aspect of the piece. I choose to work with acrylic because I can mix colors and create brushstrokes that have varied colors in them, and I can make them thinner or thicker depending on if I want a wash or a glossy glob of paint. The main reason I focus on form is because I want to be able to develop my use of the principles of art and see how I can make my pieces aesthetically pleasing and establish a personal style.
My current work is focused on color and texture. This grew from the goals that I made for myself from prior projects, and I have gravitated towards these aspects because I like the way they look and I feel they are what make a good piece. My work has grown a lot since the beginning of the year and I feel that I am able to judge what my paintings need when I’m working on them. I am challenging myself to create pieces that are balanced as I decide how I want to go forward with my following work.
